10 Simple Steps to Preventing Cancer


Cancer involves abnormal growth in the human body cell, which could lead to death if detected and treated early.

This abnormality has the potential of spreading through the entire body and crippling the functionality of the human system. There are about 195 types of cancer.

Symptoms and Signs

At the early stage of the disease, there are usually no symptoms but it appears as soon as it grows.

It is often referred to as a great imitator, which is why it is frequently diagnosed in people who have been treated for other diseases with similar symptoms.

There are several symptoms and signs of cancer but the general symptoms may include skin change, weight loss, excessive fatigue and fever.


About 93% of cancer cases are caused by environmental factors such as environmental pollutants, infections and obesity, while the remaining percentage is due to inherited genes.

There are also carcinogenic substances ranging from chemical-dense food to tobacco smoke which has been linked to lung cancer.


  1. Avoid Tobacco Smoking

Tobacco Smoking, a preventable cause of cancer: primary and secondary smoking, are the largest preventable cause of cancer in countries that are developed. Tobacco consists of large amounts of chemicals that can cause lung cancer.

  1. Take It Easy With Alcohol

Heavy alcohol consumption can damage vital organs and cause liver, head, and neck cancer.

  1. Control Your Weight

Being fat is associated with some cancer like breast cancer. Exercising at least 20 minutes every day and having a sensible diet help to reduce weight gain.

  1. Exposure to Sunlight

Too much sun can damage the skin of light skinned people. Albinos are at a higher risk.  Protect yourself from direct sunlight by using hats, sun shades, protective clothing and sun protection factor (SPF).

  1. Follow Work Safety Regulations

Sometimes workers are exposed to radiation and some chemicals like asbestos, tie and dye etc. and this is Known to cause cancers such as lung cancer. Knowing the procedures and reducing exposure can reduce their risk of development.

  1. Consumption of Too Much Red Meat and Food with Too Much Fat or Sugar

Too much red meat, dairy products, fatty and sugary food is linked to colon cancer and some heart diseases. Reducing the amount of consumption of these foods is crucial to its prevention.

Screening tests can detect cancers at early stages. Regardless of socio-economic level, educational status, age, people need to go for their scheduled   screening   to enable doctors detect cancers early and start treatment.

Unprotected sex can expose people to viruses such as Immune deficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis virus (HBV), Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).The spread of these viruses is higher in people who practice risky sexual behavior such as unprotected sex, multiple sex partners, early age of sexual intercourse etc. These viruses can cause Kaposi sarcorna, liver cancer and cervical cancer respectively practice the ABC of sex (Abstain, Be faithful and use a Condom).

  1. Take Your Vaccination for HBV and HPV

HPV and HBV are some of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the world which can lead to cancer Vaccinations which are recommended from age 11 and given to women every three years after they begin sexual intercourse can protect from these viruses and the cancers they cause.

  1. Eat Fruits, Fibre and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are known to contain substances like vitamins, flavonoids and carotenoids that nourish the body, and prevent cancer. They also help to detoxify the body and push out waste, increasing the amount of these foods daily can helps reduce the case of cancer.
