Venus Williams strikes a comeback against Madison Keys of the United States during day four of the Rogers Cup at Uniprix Sports stadium on 28 July, 2016 in Montreal, Canada.
Venus Williams rushed out in the third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Thursday, July suffering an upset loss to Madison Keys in her final tournament before the Olympic Games.
The sixth-seeded Williams were crushed 6-1, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3 by tenth seed Keys, who will now face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarter-finals. 36 year-old Williams looked well below her best as Keys made head way with the first set before making a 3-1 lead in the second set.
However Williams, who made the final of last week’s tournament in Stanford, rallied to level with victory in the second set tiebreak. Keys raised her game in the decisive third set but quickly broke Williams to achieve the advantage before changing match point with an ace to close the victory. Pavlyuchenkova earlier scored the largest upset of the day with a three-set finish over 2014 champion and fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, winning 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-1.
