The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has given reasons into his inability to continue with his education during his days as a military officer.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 14, by the senior special assistant on media and publicity to the president Femi Adesina, military officers back in the days were preoccupied with war, coups and counter-coups.
The statement was given during the decoration of Commander of the Presidential Air Fleet, Air-Vice Marshal Sadiq Kaita and President Buhari’s Aide-De-Camp colonel Mohammed Abubakar with their new ranks at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
President Muhammadu Buhari was quoted saying: “I am happy with the intellectual approach of the military. In our time, there was no time for academic pursuit. It was all about war, coups and counter-coups.”
President Buhari said modern military required superiority of intellect and imagination to achieve victory in warfare.
Impressed with the qualifications of the newly decorated officers, President Buhari urged all officers to ensure the translation of academic achievements to performance in the field and other places of assignment.
He urged military officers to make good use of time; peace and stability pursue their intellectual transformation.
This he said should go side-by-side with hardware transformation of modern armies.
The President encouraged the officers to read History, irrespective of their academic backgrounds.
President Buhari also said History is a key prerequisite for strategic learning and success in the military.
Congratulating the newly promoted senior officer, the president urged them to always be mindful of the welfare of those placed under their command.
The newly promoted officers had served Nigeria in various peace keeping missions abroad.
President Buhari’s emergence as president has faced various challenges including the controversy surrounding his Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE).
