Barcelona is interested in hiring Sevilla coach, Jorge Sampaoli as Luis Enrique’s successor if the Asturian coach does not sign a contract extension.
Coach Sampaoli’s team lost 2-1 at home against Barcelona on Sunday night but played spectacularly in the 1st half and impressed the Catalan club’s board in what could prove to be employment audition for him.
Barcelona’s initial option is to offer Luis Enrique a new deal, given the great success he has enjoyed at the Nou Camp over the previous 2 seasons, but he is not interested in discussing the matter till the end of the season.
Enrique led Barcelona to the treble in 2014-15, followed by the league and cup double in 2015-16, including other trophies like the club world cup and Spanish and European super cups, bringing back the glory days Pep Guardiola enjoyed at Barcelona.
However, the coach has hinted that he could take a break like Guardiola did at the end of his contract, saying: “if i don’t continue coaching, it will be down to a lack of energy.”
The Catalonia giant will try and open talks with Enrique in the New Year, but as is natural are lining up possible choices to switch him if they cannot agree on a deal.
Sampaoli is one of the names on the list and has risen higher still in the standings after Sevilla’s brilliant performance which was only undone by a spectacular display from Lionel Messi.
At the end of the game Neymar, Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi greeted Jorge Sampaoli, something which Spanish media were extremely interested in as it is rare for the players to show so much affection towards an opposition coach.
