Rivers state commissioner of police, Francis Odesanya lost his life at Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad-Gujarat, India, on Tuesday morning.
Inspector-general of police, Ibrahim Idris had confirmed his demise in a statement.
Idris expressed regrets over the development, disclosing that the deceased passed on at the age of 56.
Meanwhile, Omoni Nnamdi, the spokesman of the state police command, had earlier told TheCable that he was not aware of the incident.
Francis Odesanya, the 37th police commissioner in Rivers, succeeded Foluso Adebanjo in July 2016.
Odesanya joined the police as a cadet assistant superintendent in February 1986.
He hailed from Ikenne in Ogun state had served as deputy commissioner of police, department of operations and that of finance and administration, in Rivers.
