Acting President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo will, today Tuesday 7, swear in Justice Walter Onnoghen as the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The ceremony has been slated to hold at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, by 9am.
It is not, however, clear if Onnoghen will be decorated with the national honour of the Grand Commander of Order of the Niger (GCON) as customary with the inauguration of past CJNs. The decoration is usually done shortly after taking an oath of office by the new CJN.
The Ag. president had, on February 8, 2017, 48 hours to the expiration of his tenure as ag. the chief judge sent Onnoghen’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation.
President Buhari, who is currently on extended medical vacation in London had, on November 10, 2016, inaugurated Onnoghen as acting CJN following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed at the attainment of the mandatory 70 years retirement age.
Onnoghen is remarkably the first southerner to be CJN since 1987 when Ayo Irikefe retired.
